Rangers will receive £1m if they beat Borussia Dortmund in Europa League

They already hold a 4-2 lead after the first leg but Rangers have more than the round of 16 to look forward to in the Europa League.

If Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men manage to hold off Borussia Dortmund at Ibrox on Thursday, they will pocket more than £1million in prize money.

The Daily Record broke down the Light Blues’ earnings in the Europa League so far although the TV money isn’t calculated until the end of the season.

For just qualifying for the group stages, the Gers earned £3,038,274 while their two wins at that stage brought them £527,303 each.

Two draws saw £351,534 in total added to the jar and £460,344 for finishing second in their group.

Getting to the playoff has seen another £418,940 added but the big prizes are yet to come with £1,005,457 awaiting the winner of this tie.

Extend the gap

Rangers may be behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership right now but the Hoops won’t be getting this kind of money in the Europa Conference League.

Especially as they are likely to be knocked out by Norwegian champions Bodo/Glimdt who won 3-1 at Parkhead last week.

It might take a few years to see the real benefit of this Europa League run come to fruition but with every penny the club earns on the continent, their potential ceiling gets further above that of their Glasgow rivals.

Not only that, but they continue to raise the coefficient of Scotland if they go on a good run in Europe and that might see the return of automatic Champions League places for the league winners.

It’s something that Rangers really need because they are close to being one of the best teams in the Europa League even at the knockout stage where they could exceed Barcelona’s run if they don’t win at Napoli.

Now that would be an arrow to the quiver of van Bronckhorst and the players if they can pull that off.

In other Rangers news, a major update on Aaron Ramsey has surfaced after he missed the club’s behind-closed-doors friendly against Brentford.
