Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhosrt fumes in VAR rant

Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst has highlighted the importance of VAR after his side were held to a 1-1 draw against Dundee United.

The Gers could have been awarded two penalties if the video assistant referee was in use with two potential penalties denied at Tannadice Park.

However, van Bronckhorst was reluctant to blame the officials for his side dropping points.

“You know my standing point, VAR will make it easier and these decisions can be turning points. They can change the games. But there is no VAR, so end of discussion.” The Dutchman told The Scotsman.

“What can we do? There is no VAR so every decision that the referee will make cannot be overturned. We have to respect the decision that he makes.

“We saw last Thursday when VAR decisions (in Dortmund) changed the game for us. Today maybe as well. But we can talk for hours here and the discussion ends because there is no VAR.

“The first emotion of course is disappointment that we didn’t win here. I don’t know how many chances we created; I think the most chances we created this season to score. But eventually the chances have to be scored and that is what we didn’t do today and that is why we dropped points.”

No excuses

The truth is it simply wasn’t good enough from the Light Blues today. They should have been awarded two pens and if they had, they would have undoubtedly won the game, but you can’t use that as an excuse for a performance that bad.

As understood by the boss, referees make mistakes so Rangers should have buried the game themselves by playing the football everyone knows they can rather than complaining about the ref.

It is a bitterly disappointing result after the game against Borussia Dortmund in the week but one that was half expected with such an emphatic victory last time out.

The Bears can’t afford many more slip ups – if any – from now until the end of the season if they want to retain the title.

Celtic now sit with a comfortable three-point cushion over Rangers but there is still a lot of football to play and greater odds have been overturned.
