German newspapers react as Rangers stun Borussia Dortmund, ‘apocalyptic mood’ at Signal Iduna Park

Rangers shocked European football on Thursday night with a stunning 4-2 win away at Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League knockout play-off.

German newspapers have reacted to the first leg victory at Signal Iduna Park, where, according to local newspaper Ruhr Nachrichten, there was an “apocalyptic mood”.

They also say that Dortmund hit a “new low” and collapsed “like a house of cards” against Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side, who won through goals by James Tavernier, Alfredo Morelos, John Lundstram and a Dan-Axel Zagadou own-goal.

German tabloid BILD called the result “embarrassing” for Dortmund while Die Welt said manager Marco Rose is “at a loss” and pointed out “deafening expressions of displeasure” from the home fans at Signal Iduna Park.

Let it sink in

We still cannot believe what we witnessed last night.

Glasgow Rangers Football Club completely outclassed one of the best teams in European football and now stand a big chance of making the last-16 of the Europa League.

Who’d have thought it?

Steven Gerrard did a brilliant job with us in Europe before he left but van Bronckhorst could take the Light Blues to a new level if he manages to oversee a victory.

It’s going to be tough next week at Ibrox in the second leg but if we can win 4-2 away in Germany then you’d imagine that the players will be confident of getting a result on their home turf.

It shows that the initial slow start to 2022 has faded away now too with the Gers securing big wins over Hibs, Hearts, Annan and now Dortmund since the loss in the Old Firm.

A victory like that can be a massive boost for league games too. If we can beat Dortmund that easily away from home then we can thrash absolutely anyone and everyone in Scotland.

In other Rangers news, a journalist feels this Gers defender is “struggling” at Ibrox.
