BBC pundit Steven Thompson destroys Rangers star Connor Goldson v Borussia Dortmund

Steven Thompson has destroyed Rangers defender Connor Goldson for his defending in the huge win against Borussia Dortmund on Thursday evening.

The BBC pundit was left far from impressed as the enforcer left Dan-Axel Zagadou free in the box, but the Frenchman somehow missed.

It proved to be crucial too, as James Tavernier and Alfredo Morelos fired home before the half-time whistle and the Bears then went on to score four.

Speaking during coverage of the game for the BBC, Thompson singled out Goldson for his marking at a corner.

“Connor Goldson has just switched off,” he said.

“It’s horrendous defending. Zagadou is the biggest player in Dortmund’s team and he was free seven yards from goal.”

Horrendous.

We certainly got away with one here, and it proved to be huge.

In many senses, it was the turning point, with Allan McGregor making sure that slack defending like that never happened again.

All of the momentum changed on the back of that, and Goldson certainly got the warning he needed after falling to sleep and getting more than lucky.

You saw that Rangers didn’t allow that to happen again, with Giovanni van Bronckhorst surely having words during the break.

It was brilliant after that, and the penalty was also slightly lucky given that VAR was in use after everyone missed the clear handball.

In huge European ties such as this one, sometimes you need luck, Zagadou missing was what Rangers deserved, and they took advantage of that afterwards.
