Rangers reportedly rubbish claim that Alex Lowry has rejected new contract

Exciting youngster Alex Lowry has apparently not rejected a new Rangers deal after the club rubbished such claims as “nonsense” according to Derek Clark.

The Rangers Review writer was responding to reports this morning (Wednesday February 16) that the 18-year-old had thrown his future into question by turning down an offer.

The teenager has burst onto the scene with some eye-catching performances this season, including in Gers’ most recent cup match against Annan Athletic, after which he was quoted as saying, via Rangers Review: “Delighted to get more minutes and thankful to the boss and staff again to be given the opportunity. Just delighted.”

Writing on his personal Twitter account, Clark said: “Rangers say reports claiming Alex Lowry has rejected a new deal are ‘nonsense’”.

First step in negotiations?

It would be a significant blow for the young winger to be looking for a way out of the club considering how he has performed so far.

The attacker only signed a two-year extension in June, but the quality has shown so far this season has prompted the club to look to head off interest by tying him down longer term.

Negotiations such as these are often a back and forth affair involving the club and the player’s agent, so it may be that an opening offer was deemed unacceptable for Lowry’s potential.

The club surely would not be deterred by a single rejection if that is the case and would likely come back with an improved offer.

It may be relevant that the player is himself a Light Blues fan, as often in such situations, a club will look to extract a form of ‘home town discount’ by relying on the emotional attachment and offering lower than they otherwise would.

Any agent is sure to look to push back against this, in both the player’s and their own interests, so the process may simply be going through the motions before an inevitable deal is reached.

Lowry seems pleased with his progress, fans have enjoyed what they have seen, and Giovanni van Bronckhorst will value the option he has so far provided, so it makes too much sense not to secure a long-term deal.

In other Rangers news, the club chief of this Gers transfer target has reportedly admitted the player is likely to leave.
