Giovanni van Bronckhorst allows Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent Rangers freedom ahead of Dortmund

Rangers pair Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent are benefiting from Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s decision to allow them to use their “intuition” in games.

The attacking duo have been in spectacular form in the last two league victories over Hearts and Hibs, and the manager hopes they can carry that into the Europa League clash with Borussia Dortmund.

The Dutchman believes that it is important to allow his best attackers an element of freedom to get the most out of them, while not losing sight of the overall tactical shape.

In his press conference ahead of the first leg agains the German giants he said, via Football Scotland: “It’s a combination. You have players who will play with their intuition at moments of the game.

“I think we have to give that freedom to players, not only to Alfredo but to all the strikers.

“They are able to play with intuition but you want to have your shape as a team and Alfredo has a big role in that.

“At moments he has to take the position we want him to to become dangerous and be in better shape as a team but there are moments he has freedom to do whatever he feels in those situations.

“He is one of the players who can do that. Ryan is another player who has the freedom to do whatever he feels in areas we want him to be.”

Paying dividends

Although Gers go into the European tie as underdogs they have a chance to spring an upset, especially with superstar Norwegian striker Erling Braut Haaland expected to miss the first leg.

Morelos and Kent are sure to be a big part of whatever the Light Blues can get out of the tie, and come in off the back of two standout showings.

Since his return from international duty following the Old Firm derby the Colombian striker has scored three times and assisted another in the two SPFL games.

His English teammate meanwhile assisted two, won a penalty for a third, and generally terrorised both Edinburgh opponents.

The arrival of former Netherlands internationals van Bronckhorst and Roy Makaay at Ibrox have been credited for the goalscoring form of Morelos, as both speak Spanish which has aided them in communicating their tactical preferences.

For both players the coaching staff appear to have hit on a winning formula of late, which was certainly needed after the team struggled on returning from the winter break.

In other Rangers news, John Hartson has accused the club of being “shallow” in the dispute with Celtic over away fans.
