Aaron Ramsey agent blasts Celtic Way journalist over ‘disrespectful’ claim about Rangers star

Aaron Ramsey’s agent has blasted journalist Alison McConnell after she claimed it was a “desperate” move by Rangers to sign the Juventus midfielder on loan.

On deadline day on 31 January, the Gers signed Ramsey, 31, on loan for the rest of the season.

He’s been gradually building up his fitness since and was handed his full debut by Giovanni van Bronckhorst on Saturday in the Scottish Cup win at Annan.

Speaking to PLZ Soccer this week, McConnell, who writes for The Celtic Way and The Herald, claimed that there was no “defined” strategy behind Rangers’ move for Ramsey.

That prompted a response from the player’s agent David Baldwin.

Writing via his personal Twitter account on Tuesday morning [15 February], he said: “What a stupid article, total lack of understanding on the business of football and written in a disrespectful manner to a top player.

“Rag journalism.”

Rangers’ official media partner Heart & Hand Podcast, ran by David Edgar, backed up that Baldwin is Ramsey’s agent and added: “It’s bizarre that a professional journalist could have believed a deal like that was done in a night.”

Ridiculous

Just because we only heard about a potential move for Ramsey on 30 January, doesn’t mean that’s when the deal started to make progress.

And still, even if it did, Rangers made a last-ditch January swoop to sign a central midfielder from Juventus who’s got years of international and Premier League experience.

Ramsey is someone who’s won a lot and played a lot while his addition also added some serious quality in an area where there have been injuries and underperformers this season.

Signing him made sense and it’s no shock that someone who writes for the Celtic Way decided to have a pop at the Gers over signing him.

Good on Baldwin for responding and highlighting just how ridiculous McConnell’s words are.

For someone who works in football, she should know that transfers are not just thrown up overnight.

Sure, it accelerated in the last days of the transfer window but that happens all the time at clubs up and down the country and across the world.

But then again, it’s a stick that someone who’s found to beat Rangers with.

We’re not surprised at all.
