Schalke unwilling to offer Rangers target Martin Fraisl new deal

Schalke are not keen on offering a new contract to their goalkeeper Martin Fraisl, amid links to Rangers.

Sporting director Rouven Schroder, while praising the 28-year-old shot stopper, said that they’re not looking to give him a new deal despite his current one running out this June.

Per the Daily Record, Giovanni van Bronckhorst and the Gers are keen on securing the Austrian’s services and could snap him up on a free transfer.

Schroder said, “With specific regards to Martin Fraisl – he’s doing an excellent job.

“We’re monitoring his situation closely, but our focus is currently on day-to-day business and therefore, there will not be any concrete contract talks with him in the near future.”

Snap him up?

Fraisl is certainly better than the second tier of German football and Gers could offer him an escape route.

If they win the league, they will secure straight qualification to the Champions League group stages.

Rangers

That would tempt players like the Austrian and others who want regular playing time and also fancy testing themselves against the continent’s elite clubs.

Allan McGregor is already 40 and it’s no point to have such a senior keeper as the first choice.

Fraisl is 12 years his junior and could be at the club for the next decade if he’s a success.

Jon McLaughlin is the current number two and it’ll be healthy competition to see him and Fraisl vying for the first-team jersey.

In other Rangers news, the club could have signed a ‘Combative’ centre mid whose father was an Ibrox icon.
