Barry Ferguson backs Allan McGregor to stay at Rangers next season

Barry Ferguson believes Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor can continue playing at this level for another season, despite being 40-years-old.

McGregor is the current number one at Ibrox and has been great between the sticks this season, despite turning 40 last month.

The former Scotland international’s current contract is set to expire at the end of the season, with some expecting he could retire, but former Bears captain Ferguson told Go Radio he believes he can go for another year at least.

“He’s not getting any younger but I still think he’s a top keeper and it’ll be up to Allan. He has had injuries in the past.

“After those mistakes, you saw what type of character he is. You saw the performance he had against Celtic because it could have been six or seven without Allan McGregor.

“He had a back problem three or four years ago, I know that’s the reason he stopped playing international football. I’d like to see him stay. He’s old enough to make his own mind up but I still think there’s football left in Allan McGregor.”

Number one

McGregor has been the Rangers number one for several years now and he’s very rarely let the club down.

Recent weeks have seen a little blip in his form but he has bounced back well and was solid against Hearts in the 5-0 win most recently.

Despite being 40, if there are no signs of him slowing down then Rangers don’t need to rush to replace him.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst wants to implement a style at Rangers and that starts with the outfielders. This summer will be a big one with 13 players out of contract in the next 18 months, so decisions will need to be made.

If McGregor is happy to continue, then the club should hand him a new deal and focus on other areas of the pitch for the immediate future.

He’s good enough to play at this level and has given Rangers zero reasons to think otherwise as of now.
