Rangers performance v Hearts ‘didn’t really matter’ according to Kris Boyd

Rangers bounced back from Wednesday’s Old Firm humiliation at Celtic with a thumping 5-0 demolition of third-placed Hearts at Ibrox.

Alfredo Morelos bagged a brace on his return to the side from international duty before Glen Kamara, Scott Arfield and Fashion Sakala added extra flair to the final score.

It was a crucial victory for the Light Blues’ season after three without a win in the Scottish Premiership and the manner of the win was simply the cherry on top of the cake.

Gers icon Kris Boyd remarked after the game on Sky Sports that he didn’t believe the performance mattered for van Bronckhorst’s side but to win in such a manner was a big statement.

“Giovanni van Bronckhorst will be delighted because it didn’t really matter what happened here today because Rangers just needed to find a way to win but they’ve managed to do it with five goals,” Boyd said.

“It’s a big performance and it shows that Rangers aren’t going to go away, they’ll challenge right to the end.”

Must do it again

Sunday’s victory was exactly what the doctor ordered at Ibrox but there is no time to relax for van Bronckhorst or any of the layers.

Rangers knew they needed to respond to Wednesday’s disaster but they will have also been aware of Celtic’s 4-0 hammering of Motherwell earlier on in the day.

They don’t get more than three points for a win, regardless of how big the margin is so Boyd is right when he says the performance didn’t matter.

But to bounce back in such emphatic fashion is a real statement to their Glasgow rivals that they are not going to lie down without a fight and they have to keep that pressure at the maximum all the way until May.

The Hoops may have the advantage but at their best, Rangers are the best team in the country.
