Rangers captain Connor Goldson named as ‘best defender’ in Scotland by opponent

Rangers captain Connor Goldson has been named as the best defender in Scotland by Hearts midfielder Liam Boyce.

The two came up against each other on Sunday with the Ibrox side coming out on top in a 5-0 thrashing, with Goldson performing brilliantly once again in defence.

Boyce was speaking to the Scottish Sun when he revealed that the 29-year-old is the best defender he has come up against in Scotland and sometimes, you have to just hold your hands up and admit there’s nothing you can do to beat him.

“Since I came to Hearts I would say Connor Goldson has been the best defender I have come up against,” he said.

“He has probably got everything. Even when Rangers beat us at Tynecastle, you saw the pass which set up the goal. It was class, to be honest. You can do whatever you want, but when someone is going to hit a pass like that it is going to cause problems.

“It is very difficult to play against Goldson. But the way we play it is all about getting up the pitch and movement in the box.

“You just need him to not read your movement once to get that chance in the box. And then, if he stops you every single time you just need to hold your hand up and say he defended well.”

Huge

Goldson is a big presence for Rangers on and off the pitch and as captain he often leads by example.

His size, mobility and ability on the ball make him a complete package and Rangers are by far a better team when he is available to them.

His contract situation has seen the club move for John Souttar already, Boyce’s teammate, who will join the club in the summer. Ideally though they would look to pair them both together to form a huge partnership.

Goldson’s deal is due to expire at the end of the season and currently no agreement is in place for him to stay beyond then, but both parties are open to making it happen.

Considering how highly regarded he is among his peers, Rangers should be looking to tie him down for as long as possible to continue to have an added small advantage over opposition attackers.
