Scott Arfield reveals contract talks with Rangers, wants quick agreement

Rangers are in talks with Scott Arfield’s agent over a new contract for the Canadian, with his current deal set to expire in the summer.

The 33-year-old looked like he might be departing Ibrox after the season as his contract had run down so far, but his recent performances appear to have sparked the club into action.

The midfielder said on Friday (February 4) ahead of the weekend clash with Hearts, as quoted by Football Scotland: “My agent is talking to the club, this is a club I want to be a part of and, hopefully, we can get an agreement quite quickly.

“I’ve never said anything different – how happy I am here, how grateful I am to play for this football club.

“I love being part of this football club, so, hopefully, that can get sorted as soon as possible.”

Good news

Following the awful Old Firm derby defeat in midweek the club will take any positive news it can get.

Things don’t get any easier or less important with the visit of third-place Hearts on Sunday.

So the news that the man who secured Gers’ only victory so far in 2022 with his late winner over Livingston is in line to extend his stay in Glasgow will be a lift.

Arfield could be in line to come into a midfield that was overrun at Parkhead, and may look very different at the weekend.

Ryan Jack came on in the second half on Wednesday night and was one of the few bright spots on a miserable evening.

And blockbuster deadline day loan signing Aaron Ramsey may be ready to feature for the first time, having watched the mid-week mauling from that stands.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s arrival appeared to have been a masterstroke during an excellent start, but suddenly it’s all change at Ibrox with the declining results and the new arrivals.

The club need to return to their pre-Christmas form.

In other Rangers news, one former Celtic man has accused Gers only beating the Hoops without fans.
