Kris Boyd outlines huge target Rangers must achieve to win the league

Kris Boyd has singled out Rangers duo Allan McGregor and Scott Arfield as the only two who earned ‘pass marks’ against Celtic.

The Gers’ terrible first half performance saw the game and the league lead fall away from them at Celtic Park with Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s team falling down to second place.

Only one point behind their Old Firm rivals, Boyd believes the Bears could still secure back-to-back Scottish Premierships.

“From the team that started, Allan McGregor and Scott Arfield are the only two men who earned pass marks,” Said Boyd as per Scottish Sun.

“The rest should be hanging their heads in shame after that performance.

“The question now is whether Rangers’ title chances went with it? That may sound like a big thing to say given Rangers were top of the league going into the derby and are only one point behind Celtic. But Ange Postecoglou has a team with its tail up.

“There is energy there and a tremendous will to win and it’s hard to see that group of players letting their standards drop now.

“For me, Rangers will probably need to win 13 of their remaining 14 league matches between now and the end of the season. And at least draw the other one with Celtic back at Parkhead.”

Game on

If the past few weeks has shown us anything, it’s that the team at the top of the table can slip up.

The worrying sign for Rangers is that they gradually lost their lead at the top of the league over several poor performances with the Old firm thrashing the icing on the cake.

That indicates that something isn’t quite right within the squad at the moment but if you are challenging for a title, rocky periods must be expected, and the Bears must do everything possible to keep the gap between them and Celtic at one point whilst riding it out.

The hugely positive end to the January transfer window will fill the team with confidence. Smart additions such as Amad Diallo and Aaron Ramsey could make the difference once integrated properly into the squad.

The Bears still have to welcome their Glaswegian rivals to Ibrox in April where they will certainly seek revenge. There is a lot of football to be played from now until then, but one thing is for sure, the title race is on.
