Chris Sutton hopes for ‘better team’ Celtic to win Old Firm derby clash with Rangers

Chris Sutton has slipped in an obligatory dig at Rangers on Twitter ahead of the massive Old Firm clash tonight at Celtic Park.

The former Celtic striker is always an outspoken supporter of the other half of Glasgow and revels in winding up Gers fans.

And tonight is no different as the BT and BBC pundit had to make his preference known on Twitter while he looked forward to the top of the table game, delivering a fair “best team win” angle before immediately deciding that is Celtic.

Writing on his personal Twitter account ahead of the match Sutton said: “Can’t wait for the biggest Derby game in world football tonight and listening to @alibruceball on @5liveSport in Paradise !!

“Nothing decided this evening however and may the best team win (Celtic)”, he added, never missing an opportunity.”

The Scottish Premiership top two go into the derby with only two points separating them after differing form since coming back from the winter break.

Neither side has been at their best but Celtic have picked up three wins from there while Rangers have dropped points with two away draws.

All part of the occasion

The former Blackburn and Norwich striker’s outspoken nature is what makes him the pundit that he is.

His famous support of Celtic and antagonisation of Rangers is all part of what makes the Old Firm derby what he classifies the biggest in the world.

He knows what he is doing and he is having fun with it, and it is the knowledge that a win will give fans the chance to turn it round on him after the final whistle, and a loss runs the risk of him gloating further, which contributes to a special atmosphere.

Rangers

The tension ahead of this meeting could hardly be higher, as what looked like turning into a cruise to a second consecutive title for Gers following the arrival of Giovanni van Bronckhorst has suddenly become tight.

The focus has been on who was missing so far in 2022 with Joe Aribo at the Africa Cup of Nations, Alredo Morelos called away to Colombia, Ryan Kent getting suspended and then Ianis Hagi being ruled out for the season.

But with a blockbuster final week of the transfer window at Ibrox, attention can start to turn to who the team now has, although deadline day star arrival Aaron Ramsey will not feature tonight.

Amad Diallo likely will though following his goal-scoring start after his loan from Manchester United, as The Light Blues look to make a big statement and get back on track.

In other Rangers news, Simon Jordan has slammed the Old Firm on talkSPORT ahead of the game.
