View: Rangers bid for Simons hangs on PSG signing a replacement

Rangers reportedly been in the hunt for PSG midfielder Xavi Simons this month but with just over 24 hours to go before the deadline closes, it isn’t looking good.

AS reported of Rangers’ interest in the 18-year-old in December but there has been little movement since then with the Gers looking elsewhere for priority.

The Parisians have been trying to bring in another midfielder all window as well and they did have their eyes on Tanguy Ndombele at Tottenham Hotspur.

They agreed a loan fee and personal terms but the deal fell through as the French giants couldn’t create a space in their squad to register the 25-year-old [Julien Maynard, TF1]

No one knows if it has occurred to Mauricio Pochettino and PSG that allowing Simons to join Rangers would have opened up that registration slot for Ndombele but it has cost the Gers big time.

The 18-year-old is out of contract at the Parc Des Princes in the summer so is likely to leave the club anyway so why they haven’t let him go now is beyond everyone.

They could still do a deal if they agree to loan Simons to Rangers for the rest of this season which would allow them to bring in another midfielder in his place.

For the Gers though, they now seemingly have to wait a further six months before they can try again and by then, he won’t have a club and there will be a swarm of clubs from across Europe hoping to make the best offer to the teenager.

He would slot into Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s midfield seamlessly alongside Joe Aribo, should the Nigerian stay beyond this season, and would be a cut above the rest of the Scottish Premiership should he head for Ibrox next season.

In other Rangers news, the club are on the home straight in the race to sign this highly-rated Polish defender.
