BBC Sportscene host disgusted by racism aimed at Regan Charles-Cook after Rangers draw v Ross County

Jonathan Sutherland is disgusted by Ross County’s Regan Charles-Cook being racially abused after his side’s 3-3 draw with Rangers on Saturday.

Charles-Cook, 24, scored his ninth goal of the Scottish Premiership season in his side’s impressive draw in Dingwall but after the game, he took to Twitter to say he’s been left “extremely hurt and frustrated” by numerous racist messages sent to him.

BBC Sportscene host Sutherland and pundit Chris Iwelumo discussed the incident on Saturday night and they both hope the perpetrators are punished.

“Disgusting, after the match, he’s subjected to online racist abuse,” said host Sutherland on BBC Sportscene on 29 January.

“He’s tweeted about it, he’s hurt and frustrated. Chris, it’s unbelievable that this is happening in 2022 and you only hope that the people doing it are held to account.”

Iwelumo replied to say: “Well that it’s it. It’s 2022 and this is still going on.

“I get it every day on social media but it’s one of these things I’ve normalised. I shouldn’t because it’s an illegal offence and hopefully like you say, they’ll be held to account.”

Ban them for life

If the police can find out who sent the messages to Charles-Cook, they should banned from Ibrox – and any other football match for life.

As we’ve seen in England, people are now serving jail time for sending racist messages on social media and rightly so.

In September, West Brom fan Simon Silwood was jailed for eight weeks after sending a racist message on Facebook about Romaine Sawyers [BBC News].

If someone is found guilty for racially abusing Charles-Cook, the same should happen.

Charles-Cook has had an incredible season so far for Ross County and just because he scored against the team you support doesn’t mean there’s a right for abusive messages – of any nature – to be sent to him.

He’s the top goalscorer in the Scottish Premiership right now and he has every right to be enjoying his stellar campaign.

Racism is disgusting and we really do not understand what people get out of it.

Unfortunately, it’s not the only incident that’s involved Rangers fans this season and we worry that it’s not the last either.
