Rangers fear Scott Arfield exit as contract nears expiration, interest from USA

Rangers are worried that they may lose Scott Arfield for nothing in the summer when his contract expires, according to The Mirror.

The newspaper reported via their print edition on Friday [28 January, page 53] that Arfield, 33, is wanted by clubs in the USA, who could be eyeing up a bargain deal for the Canada international this year.

Arfield has been in superb form since Giovanni van Bronckhorst was hired and he came off the bench to score the winner against Livingston on Wednesday night.

New deal needed

Rangers have a lot of players who are reaching the end of their contracts. According to transfermarkt, eight senior players could leave Ibrox in the summer for nothing.

Most notable, Steven Davis, Allan McGregor, Connor Goldson, Leon Balogun and Arfield are among them.

While there are some players who fans will debate about whether or not they deserve a new deal and should be cut adrift, we really don’t feel as though Arfield should be released.

Since van Bronckhorst’s arrival at Ibrox in November, the former Burnley and Falkirk midfielder has been in superb form.

He’s scored twice in matches against Livingston and the only Scottish Premiership game we dropped points in since van Bronckhorst’s appointment was when the experienced midfielder was injured and didn’t play.

On Wednesday, his goal against Livi was absolutely ridiculous it was that good.

We struggled to make a breakthrough all game until a moment of magic – described as “unbelievable” by Richard Foster on BBC Sportscene on 26 January – by Arfield.

Rangers need to open contract talks now if they haven’t already because we really want to see the Canada international stay on for at least another year.

In other Rangers news, Michael Stewart was blown away by this player who started in the win over Livingston.
