Alfredo Morelos to stay at Rangers in January

Alfredo Morelos has reaffirmed his commitment to Rangers amid transfer speculation, saying he is “very happy” and wants to play in the Champions League.

The striker had been linked to a £20million transfer to cash-rich Newcastle during the window (CBS), but has told Sky Sports that he is focused on winning the Scottish Premiership and qualifying for Europe.

Speaking exclusively to the broadcaster the Colombian said: “I feel very happy in Glasgow, as do my family. My daughter is really settled here, I feel very pleased. Rangers really welcomed me when I joined, as did the fans, so I feel really happy here.

“Playing in the Champions League is a source of motivation for me. We’re going to fight for that.

“There’s always more (to come). I feel there’s always more. I want to keep scoring goals, playing well for Rangers, and doing my bit for the team, which is the most important thing for me, as we go after the targets that we set ourselves.”

Positive development

Due to his success in Glasgow the 25-year-old is always a potential transfer target, and with Newcastle being both a relegation candidate in the Premier League and now arguably the richest club in the world he was considered a target, along with Everton and Leicester (CBS).

But coming out to publicly state he is focused on playing football for the Light Blues will be a weight of his manager and his fans’ minds.

It is especially good news as the goalscorer has found the net six times in nine matches since van Bronckhorst replaced Steven Gerrard.

This form lead to him being named the December Player of the Month, while the Dutchman picked up the manager’s award.

His return to his national side’s squad has ruled him out of the upcoming Old Firm derby, which is a huge blow, but it seems that a much greater absence is not on the cards.

It cannot be certain what the future holds for Morelos if a Champions League club were to come in for him in the summer, but his words would appear to remove the threat of him leaving to any of the previously mentioned sides or their equivalents.

In other Rangers news, the club could sign this SPFL midfielder.
