Rangers ace omitted from int'l selection to deny Old Firm postponement
Rangers striker Kemar Roofe has been left out of Jamaica’s squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers which ensures the Old Firm derby will go ahead.
The match against bitter rivals Celtic on 2 February had previously been touted for a postponement with more than three players expected to be called up for national duty.
But Roofe’ omission from the Jamaica squad, as confirmed here by Jamaica Football Hub on Twitter, means there are now no circumstances that could see the game called off.
The Light Blues will be without Alfredo Morelos who is away with Colombia and maybe Joe Aribo who could still be at the Africa Cup of Nations with Nigeria if they make it all the way to the final.
Celtic though will be without some of their new signings and top scorer Kyogo Furuhashi who are all away with Japan at the time.
Just get it played
Both teams are in the same boat having their top scorer unavailable and at this point, it would come across as desperate if either side tried to get the game moved again.
It should be a fantastic occasion regardless under the Glasgow night lights at Celtic Park and Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men will have as good a chance at winning as they would have done with Morelos.
This could be the big chance Cedric Itten has been waiting for to stamp his authority on the Gers and the squad overall is capable of coping without Morelos and Aribo for such a big game.
Of course, van Bronckhorst would prefer they were available but that’s the way it goes sometimes, they need to just get on with it now and win the game on 2 February, quashing all and any claims that may arise.
In other Rangers news, an injury update from Germany could bode well for Rangers in their Europa League tie.
