Ally McCoist urges Rangers to make signings before transfer window closes

Rangers legend Ally McCoist has given a ‘brutally honest’ assessment of the club’s transfer window and says they need to sign players before the month ends.

The Bears have so far signed USA international James Sands, while also securing the pre-contract agreement with Hearts defender John Souttar this month.

But the club are keen to bring in a winger according to reports and after seeing Cedric Itten return from a loan spell away too, McCoist told Premier Sports [via Daily Record] that they need ‘a couple’ more before the window slams shut.

“I look at Rangers just now and I need to be brutally honest with you, I think they need to sign a couple of players in the window,” he said.

“I really do. They need to be honest about Roofe straight away. If Roofe’s fit, Morelos is fit, Itten’s back, you’re probably covered in that area.

“I think he needs something in a wider area. Prior to the break, excellent. Nobody is panicking.

“However, you look across the city and Celtic are without a doubt freshening things up and strengthening.

“I think it won’t do Rangers any harm at all to do the same, get a couple of fresh faces in. That affects the opportunities of some of the younger players, you get them out on loan and playing games.”

Strength in depth

Something Celtic have added to their squad this month is strength in depth and if the Bears suffer with injuries in the second half of the season they could struggle.

Their squad isn’t the deepest and outside of the starting lineup the quality does drop off in particular areas of the squad.

With a little over a week to go in the transfer window, Giovanni van Bronckhorst has a chance to add to his squad and ensure that the gap between his side and Celtic stays as wide as it has been.

If they don’t add to the squad they face coming under pressure in the second half of the season, with a second consecutive title well within their reach currently.

Van Bronckhorst knows what he needs and the board know how to get it, they just need to actually go and do it now.
