James Tavernier has showered heaps of praise on Rangers’ new signing James Sands after he made his debut against Aberdeen.

Tavernier told Daily Record (printed edition; 20 January – page 58): “He’s gelled in really quickly. First game it’s obviously a big test to come up here but I thought he handled himself really well.

“He is a player we can use in the future. He’s a great squad player. He’s got to keep the levels high, especially while Joe Aribo’s away at the moment.”

Decent debut

Rangers sold Nathan Patterson in the winter transfer window to Everton for a club-record transfer fee.

The Gers moved quickly to wrap up a deal for United States international Sands from New York City on an initial 18-month loan agreement.

The 21-year-old is a highly-rated young talent who can play in multiple positions across the pitch.

He can play in midfield as also in defence. The youngster did well against Aberdeen in the midweek, and Tavernier is absolutely spot on about the youngster.

It’s a big move for him and he needs time to settle down as well.

He played in midfield alongside Glen Kamara. With Joe Aribo currently out on international duty, the youngster could play a big role going forward this season.

Rangers, meanwhile, have suffered a blow with Alfredo Morelos set to miss the Old Firm derby clash after he is being called up by the Colombia national team.

In other Rangers news, this ex-manager wants to see a Rangers star earn another contract despite concerns.
