Michael Stewart delivers verdict on Ryan Hedges penalty shout in Rangers v Aberdeen

Michael Stewart believes that Aberdeen should have been given a penalty against Rangers in the first half of their 1-1 draw on Tuesday night.

Allan McGregor appeared to have made contact with Ryan Hedges who seemed convinced that it was a penalty.

However, referee Kevin Clancy decided to wave the play on, much to the frustration of the hosts.

Speaking on BBC Radio Scotland, Stewart said, “There was contact.

“I said it could have been a free kick, then I saw it was inside the box and I thought, ‘aye, it could have been a penalty’.

“Put it this way, it if it was given against you, you’d be fuming, if you’re the attacking side you’d be claiming for it all day long.”

Got away there

We’re not here to discuss the merits of Clancy’s performance as he had an awful game.

He made some highly questionable decisions against both teams and that stopped the game from having the sort of flow and outcome that you’d expect.

Many even questioned whether Gers should’ve even been down to ten men late on in the game.

However, on most days, a penalty would’ve been given to Aberdeen, so Rangers definitely got away with that one.

The performance was a tad rusty and lethargic and they cannot afford such slip-ups too often or it could cost them dearly.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst must get into the heads of some of the players and get them focused again.
