Chris Sutton: Rangers centre-back Connor Goldson has had head turned

Chris Sutton has claimed that Rangers centre-back Connor Goldson wants to leave Ibrox and has had his head turned.

The English defender, 29, is out of contract at the end of the season, and he can agree a pre-contract with a foreign club this month ahead of a free move in the summer.

Sutton and Ally McCoist were at it on Scottish Football Extra on BT Sport last night (14 January), and the former striker took to his personal Twitter account to mock the former Bears manager.

He said: “Carter Vickers has been the best centre back in the league this season.

“Celtic the best defence in the league this season.

“Ally is upset as Goldson has had his head turned. Another one who wants away.”

Rangers have not been able to get their star defender to sign a new deal despite talks, and it appears he is set to leave for free.

Goldson joined the Premiership giants from Brighton and Hove Albion in the summer of 2018 on a four-year deal, and while he played a huge role in helping them land the title last term, he has not been particularly impressive this season.

He has not been poor, though, but it is hard to agree that he is the best centre-back in the league right now.

Nevertheless, Goldson will not be short of suitors in the summer, and Rangers will rue not attempting to hand him a new deal earlier.

They are already preparing for his eventual exit, though, with John Souttar snapped up from Heart on a pre-contact yesterday.

The Scotland international centre-back, 25, will move to Ibrox in the summer on a free, and given that he was wanted in England, the Bears have stolen a march on their rivals by securing his signature.

If Giovanni van Bronckhorst had his way, Souttar would be on his way to Ibrox this month, and it has been suggested that the club could look to make it happen.

In other Rangers news, a report has shared which players GvB will allow to leave Ibrox this month.
