John Souttar wants crack at Champions League as Rangers edge rivals

Rangers are reportedly winning the race to sign John Souttar from Hearts in the January window.

Clubs in England – Blackburn Rovers and Sheffield United – are vying for his signature. However, the Gers have made a strong pitch, according to reports from the Daily Record.

Souttar, who is out of contract at the end of the season, is attracted by the prospect of playing in Europe for Rangers next season.

Pulling power

The report claims that the Scotland defender is considering all his options, but as it stands, he prefers a move to Rangers.

He wants a “crack at the Champions League” which puts the Gers slightly favourite in the race, although the English clubs are offering him good money.

The 25-year-old travelled south to discuss pre-contract talks already but he is now considering staying in Scotland.

In that case, a move to Ibrox is a high possibility.

Rangers

Rangers are building something exciting under Giovanni van Bronckhorst. The Gers won the Scottish Premiership last season under Steven Gerrard, and it seems the Dutchman is taking the team forward to the next level.

He has made a dream start at his new club, winning all of his league games, and Rangers are firm favourites to retain the SPFL title once again.

The lure of playing in European competitions is too big to reject outright. While monetary prospects are huge incentives, every ambitious player wants to his show his talent in big European games.

This is something the Championship clubs cannot offer to Souttar.
