Heart and Hand reacts to Rangers reported interest in Harry Clarke

David Edgar has claimed that reported interest from Rangers in Arsenal youngster Harry Clarke is ‘not true’.

The Scottish Sun reported (12 January) that the Gers made an approach to sign the 20-year-old defender on a permanent basis before he agreed to join Hibs on an 18-month loan deal.

Writing on the Heart & Hand Podcast’s official Twitter account on Wednesday, the club’s official media partner said that the player was ‘never’ was Rangers’ radar.

Edgar said on Twitter: “Not true. Never been on Rangers radar.”

Need for a defender

Clarke spent the first half of the season with Ross County before Arsenal terminated the deal. He was sent on loan to Easter Road in the second half of the campaign.

His impressive performance at Victoria Park caught the attention of Rangers, although Edgar now claims he was never on the club’s radar.

Signing a defender is a priority for Giovanni van Bronckhorst after the Gers lost right-back, Nathan Patterson, this month.

The exciting young right-back joined Premier League side Everton with the Bears pocketing a hefty transfer fee from his sale.

Van Bronckhorst needs a cover for skipper James Tavernier while adding another centre-back is also in his mind.

Clarke, who can play in both positions, could have been a smart addition.

However, Rangers have already signed versatile defender James Sands this month who can be a back-up option for Tavernier.

In all probability, the Dutchman will look to sign a centre-back instead of a right-back this month, with the future of Conor Goldson still up in the air.
