Signing Benjamin Siegrist will lead to Rangers exit for Jon McLaughlin - BBC pundit
Rangers goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin will seek a move if the club follow through with their interest in Benjamin Siegrist, according to Cammy Bell.
But BBC Scotland pundit Bell believes that would force McLaughlin out of Ibrox in search of first-team football.
The former Rangers shot-stopper told Football Scotland: “He’s a fantastic goalkeeper, he’s played at a top level, but that 30-game consistency for a club like Rangers, he hasn’t had that experience yet.
“That would be my only worry. That’s why I don’t know if Jon will stay because he’ll be wanting game time.
“I think if Benjamin Siegrist signs for Rangers, I wouldn’t imagine Jon would be there next year because I think Allan (McGregor) would stay there as number one, or they would go out and sign and out and out number one.”
Three’s a crowd
The view that McLaughlin would leave in these circumstances is fairly logical as he is unlikely to be satisfied with a continued lack of action.
If the Swiss keeper arrives he is likely to come in above McLaughlin in the pecking order after recording the most saves in the Scottish Premiership last season.
Whether incumbent number-one McGregor stays on will probably have an effect on the situation and if the 39-year-old were to move on or retire it may leave the door open for the current back-up.
McLaughlin may feel that he has a fresh chance to prove he is worthy of more starts if he is competing with a player who has yet to prove himself in Glasgow, but if all three were projected to remain then battling for the reserve spot would surely not be enough.
Even if former Scotland international McGregor moves on it could make sense for his deputy to follow as manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst may well favour his own signing.
At 34, former Sunderland man McLaughlin has made nine appearances this season but with the additional presence of Robbie McCrorie he could look to escape a crowded field to extend his career elsewhere.
In other Rangers news, this ‘incredible’ player is reportedly set to snub other offers to move to Ibrox.
