Rangers want to sign Colombian star Frank Castaneda in January

Rangers are reportedly weighing up a move for Colombian attacker Frank Castaneda, who is now a free agent.

According to the Sunday Post, the defending SPFL champions want to sign the 27-year-old in January as striker Alfredo Morelos is linked with a move to Premier League side Newcastle.

Castaneda’s deal at Sheriff Tiraspol expired recently, but he made headlines with his former side as they managed to beat Real Madrid in the Champions League in 2021.

Decent replacement

Rangers have made it a penchant for signing players under the radar on the cheap who then go on to have illustrious careers.

At 27, Castaneda is certainly not one for the future, but for the present and would be a decent acquisition for the club.

He may not have the name recognition in Europe which is why there haven’t been any big clubs that are showing an interest in his services.

Apart from Rangers, only Empoli, Salernitana, Samsunspor, Sochi from and Augsburg have been named as potential destinations for the South American forward this month.

In comparison to all these clubs, Gers clearly have a higher standing in the world game and could offer him more in wages than them.

He would also be given the opportunity to play European football and potentially even the Champions League next season.

These temptations may be too good to turn down and Gers may look to sign him if and when Morelos decides to part ways with the club.

In other Rangers news, an English club has opened talks to sign an ‘Outstanding’ player wanted by the Gers this month.
