Barry Ferguson excited with Rangers new signing James Sands

Barry Ferguson has been left impressed as Rangers quickly replaced Nathan Patterson by signing James Sands this week.

Patterson joined Everton earlier this week with the Gers receiving a club record-transfer fee that could rise to £16 million.

Sands joined the Bears on an 18-month loan deal, with the Scottish champions having the exclusive option of signing him permanently.

Rangers

The Ibrox legend wrote in his column for The Daily Record: “The addition of James Sands also looks a clever bit of ducking and diving.

“He can fill in at right-back if James Tavernier is unavailable and unlike Nathan can play in a variety of other positions to strengthen the manager’s options.”

Smart signing

Ferguson is absolutely spot on when he wrote that “no one wanted to see Patterson leave”, as he is a fantastic young talent.

However, the deal makes a lot of sense. It suits all parties involved. Rangers pocketed a big amount without hampering the quality of the squad, while Patterson got his wish to join a big Premier League club.

Rangers wasted no time in securing a deal for Sands who joined from New York City on loan.

The 21-year-old can prove to be a terrific signing for the Gers as he can play in a lot of positions.

Rangers

At Rangers, he is likely to be a backup option for James Tavernier, but he can also play as a centre-back and as a central midfielder.

Sands has earned seven caps for his country, while he won the Major League Soccer championship with his club last season.

He was named as ‘Young Player of the Season’ for NYCFC for his superb performances. Sands has got the quality, mentality and experience to thrive under the Dutchman.

In other Bears news, Kris Boyd doesn’t see Katic returning to Rangers after jersey was handed to Sands.
