Gio van Bronckhorst handed Rangers transfer warning by Jorg Albertz

Jorg Albertz has delivered Giovanni van Bronckhorst a stark warning ahead of his January transfer window plans for Rangers.

His former teammate expressed his concern with the Gers boss bringing in a host of Dutch internationals to the squad much like Dick Advocaat did during his spell at Ibrox.

Albertz emphasised the importance of having Scottish or British values as van Bronckhorst looked to secure back-to-back titles for the Gers.

“I have to say, the Dutch players he (Advocaat) brought in – Giovanni, Arthur Numan, Ronald de Boer, Fernando Ricksen, Bert Konterman and Mikey Mols – were all top quality.” He said as per Daily Record.

“And having those guys there was good for everyone, including myself. That’s because if you have quality around you, it makes you play better.

“But was it necessary to bring in a Dutch doctor and a Dutch guy to run the youth academy? I’m not sure.

“Remember, it’s still a Scottish and British club. Giovanni has brought his Dutch staff in with him, which isn’t a surprise.

“But it’s important that he keeps that Scottish or British connection within the club and at the training ground. He needs people there who have been at Rangers for years.”

Balancing act

Admittedly there is a lot of truth surrounding Albertz’ comments but you have to look at the motivation behind them. The pair didn’t see each other eye to eye throughout their time playing together so his former Gers teammate could just be having a swipe at GvB.

Rangers

Football has progressively changed as the years have gone by. It is now acceptable for a manager to bring in his own back room staff and often players.

It’s clear why this might make some uncomfortable and why because the newcomers might not understand the values of the club which is massively important for Rangers.

But with the start that van Bronckhorst has made, who cares? Without the Dutch counterparts that he brought with him he might not have had this success and Bears fans would be delighted if he brought in one or two more which helps clinch the title.

You don’t have to do a complete rip out at Rangers and Albertz is spot on in terms of keeping around personnel who know the club culture and can pass it on. The balance is key and GvB has struck that perfectly since taking over.
