Rangers star named in SPFL team of the week after goal v St Mirren

Rangers star Scott Wright has been named in SPFL’s team of the week following a great display and goal in the club’s win over St Mirren.

The former Aberdeen wide-man put in a spectacular display in the 2-0 win over St Mirren on Boxing Day.

Wright scored the opener with a confident nod past keeper Jak Alnwick. Alfredo Morelos sealed the game less than 15 minutes later as Rangers dominated.

The goal was Wright’s first in league football since the opening day victory over Livingston and the star’s performance has earned him a place in the prestigious weekly line-up, posted to the official SPFL Instagram account.

Squad depth key

Wright has far from been Rangers’ most important player this season. He would probably be the first to admit that.

Stars such as Morelos, Kemar Roofe and Joe Aribo have certainly been standouts this season and have taken the plaudits.

However, fringe players and super subs are vital to Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s squad as he tries to pull away from second-placed Celtic.

Wright’s exploits have also seen him score in the Europa League and Scottish League Cup this season.

Rangers fans will be keen to see the club continue to go from strength to strength in the New Year and seal a second consecutive Scottish Premiership title, bridging the gap between themselves and arch-rivals Celtic.

Wright is one player who will be key for squad depth, adding a different dimension to van Bronckhorst’s attack. The Dutchman will be keen to keep Wright fit, as he will with all his players, ahead of a potentially packed-out Ibrox on 2 February as Rangers meet their Old Firm foes.
