Rangers icon Kris Boyd picks Gers trio in Team of the Year

Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd has revealed his Scottish Premiership Team of the Year on Sky Sports with three Gers players involved.

In a hypothetical 3-4-3 system, Boyd’s midfield was flooded with Blue as wing-back James Tavernier joins Glen Kamara and Joe Aribo.

Finnish international Kamara was a close pick with Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor the other alternative.

“Glen comes in just ahead of Callum McGregor who has also had an excellent season,” Boyd said.

“It might seem straight to slot James Tavernier into the right of my midfield four but his numbers speak for themselves. When you look at his contribution to Rangers this season he’s been excellent.”

Only three?

Considering Rangers went invincible through last season and they are top of the league again as 2021 comes to an end, to have only three plyers in the team of the year seems low.

Striker Alfredo Morelos was a standout absentee from Boyd’s team with the Gers’ icon opting instead for Celtic star Kyogo Furuhashi.

Even the defence is without a Rangers influence, as Connor Goldson is omitted from Boyd back three.

Cameron Carter-Vickers is another Celtic player to make the eleven alongside Hearts’ John Souttar and Dundee United’s Charlie Mulgrew.

Other omissions include winger Ryan Kent and goal keeper Allan McGregor while Leon Balogun was another defender to miss out on a place in Boyd’s team.

While it is obviously important to recognise star players from every club in the league, an invincible season and being top of the league again perhaps should warrant more than a midfield trio in a team of 2021.

Even manager of the year was awarded elsewhere with Dundee United’s Robbie Neilson outing former Gers’ boss Steven Gerrard, despite their remarkable 2020-21 season achievements.
