Athletic journalist takes liquidation swipe at Rangers over 150-year anniversary tweet

The Athletic’s Nottingham Forest reporter Daniel Taylor has aimed a dig at Rangers after the Glasgow giants tweeted about their upcoming anniversary superstar match.

The journalist hit back at Rangers after the club tweeted to announce next year’s Weekend of Legends game ahead of March 2022.

Taylor highlighted the fact that Rangers fell into liquidation after the Gers referred to themselves as “the first major European club to reach their 150th anniversary”. He was keen to point out Nottingham Forest’s 1865 birth and success with European Cups and Super Cups.

Comparisons

Each club has the right to big themselves up and Rangers have certainly not backed down when referring to themselves as “the first major European club to reach their 150th anniversary”.

Nottingham Forest could certainly stake a claim as they were founded in 1865. However, the whole situation is up for debate really.

Due to the differing landscapes in different leagues, the quality of the clubs around them, recency bias making some teams “bigger than others” and many more factors, the debate will continue until the end of time.

Trophies obviously play a huge part in clubs being recognised as “major”. However, some leagues are considered stronger than others and fans will always have their own opinions and would never be willing to change them.

Rangers fans will be looking forward to the superstar match set to take place in March. The game will feature Luís Figo as well as Rangers legends including Paul Gascoigne. Fans will hope COVID restrictions are lifted with the government continuing to cast doubt over whether the Old Firm will be watched by a packed-out crowd.

In other Rangers news, supporters could be let down by minister’s COVID admission.
