Rangers want New York City ace James Sands on loan in January

Rangers are keen on signing New York City ace James Sands on loan in January, according to Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb.

The 21-year-old USA international defensive midfielder, who also plays at centre-back, has been identified by the Premiership giants as someone who can help solve their lack of quality covers at the back.

Filip Helander has persistently battled a knee injury, and with Leon Balogun currently out injured, Rangers have been forced to play left-back Calvin Bassey in the heart of the defence.

Wise move

Sands played a huge role as New York City clinched the MLS title for the first time in their history a few weeks ago, featuring 31 times.

The seven-cap USMNT sensation has a bright future ahead of him, and the Light Blues could do with such a player.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst is not short of options in midfield, but he could lose some of his linked-away star players in the summer, and Sands would be ready to step into the starting XI.

Rangers are thin at the back – a situation they also witnessed in September when their Europa League campaign started – and they could do with another centre-back in January.

With Connor Goldson also likely to leave Ibrox at the end of his contract, landing a player capable of stepping in for him makes sense.

Sands’ versatility has attracted the Gers, and they can always make a final decision on a permanent transfer in the summer after his loan stint.

Rangers are currently six points clear at the top of the Premiership table, but they will need to strengthen their squad next month, and a bargain deal for the American could make a lot of sense.
