Michael Stewart thrilled by Rangers man Scott Wright vs St. Mirren on BBC Sportscene
Michael Stewart singled out Scott Wright for praises on BBC Sportscene after his goal for Rangers in the 2-0 win over St. Mirren on Boxing Day.
The winger opened the scoring for the Light Blues at Ibrox yesterday, with Alfredo Morelos doubling their lead just before the first half ended.
Wright has only started four Premiership games this term, and he made his inclusion in the starting XI for Sunday’s clash count, and that impressed Stewart.
The former Scotland midfielder said: “I think all season-long, Scott Wright has made an impact whenever he’s appeared, and here he gets up really well just towering over the St Mirren defence.
“That’s a good leap at the back from Scott Wright, and there is undoubtedly a momentum and belief in the Ranger side, and when you look at the start that Giovanni van Bronckhorst has had, it almost seems Gerrard going and van Bronckhorst coming has been a positive for Rangers.”
The 24-year-old attacker has made 21 appearances for the Bears across all competitions in 2021-22, scoring four times.
It is not a particularly impressive return, but he made his last goal count and will be hoping to do more.
Wright has scored twice in his last four games, and GvB will be demanding more from him going forward.
The Scottish midfielder is yet to fulfil the huge potential he showed while at Aberdeen, and all eyes remain on him.
He will need to start assisting and scoring more if he wants to become a Scotland international, and should he do that this season and during the first half of 2022-23, he could be part of Steve Clarke’s World Cup squad should they qualify.
Wright has a lot of work to do for that to happen, and he will need to break into Rangers XI first and become undroppable.
He has what it takes to establish himself as a key player for club and country, and it will be interesting to see whether he can kick on after the winter break and going forward.
