Rangers receive Calvin Bassey boost ahead of Celtic clash

Rangers have been handed a huge boost ahead of their clash against Celtic next month after Calvin Bassey wasn’t picked up by Nigeria, according to reports from the Daily Record.

The Super Eagles are one of the favourites for the Africa Cup of Nations, and several players from Rangers and Celtic are likely to miss their cup games.

However, Bassey wasn’t picked for the 28-man list for the Nigeria squad which means he is free to play the Old Firm clash.

Rangers, however, could potentially be without Joe Aribo and Leon Balogun, with both being included in the list for the major African tournament.

Bassey was initially included in the provisional squad named by the previous manager Gernot Rohr. However, he wasn’t picked up by the interim manager Augustine Eguavoen.

The 21-year-old defender has played a key part for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side since the Dutchman took charge of the club.

The Rangers boss will be delighted to have him in the side for such a crucial game. It also means that Bassey will available for all the games after the winter break.

Aribo and Balogun are expected to join the national team squad on December 29 to Abuja in Nigeria where the Super Eagles will hold a pre-tournament training camp.

Van Bronckhorst has made a dream start at Rangers. The Gers have won seven consecutive league games under him and managed a draw in the Europa League.

The Gers are six points ahead of Celtic at the moment in the league after 19 games.

In other Rangers news, the club want to sign a ‘Fantastic’ England international who is 28, and could get him to sign a pre-contract once the January window opens on 1st.
