Watford join race to sign Rangers left-back Borna Barisic

Watford have shown an interest in signing Rangers defender Borna Barisic, but could be put off by his price tag, according to The Athletic.

The report claims that the 29-year-old could cost the Premier League club a fee in the region of £5-8 million.

The left-back has two years left on his contract so Gers are under no real pressure of cashing in on his services in the January window.

Aston Villa have also shown an interest in securing the Croatia international’s services since Steven Gerrard walked through the door.

Should stay

Among all the players that are linked with January exits to the Premier League, Barisic seems among the least likely to actually leave.

Barisic, who has been labelled “magnificent” by Frank McAvennie, appears content at the Ibrox and his recent comments even suggested that he’s going to shun any approaches that come his way.

With two years left on his deal, there is also no contractual obligation for the club to cash in on him.

Should he change his mind and get tempted by a move to Watford or Villa, then they will have to match Rangers’ valuation.

Even though they would want him to stay, every player has a price and given the fact that Barisic is nearing 30, he’s unlikely to fetch eight figures.

The next few weeks are crucial, not just for his future at the club, but for plenty others linked with the exit door.
