David McCarthy claims Rangers acting in self interest regarding winter break

Daily Record’s David McCarthy has accused Rangers of acting in self-interest because they do not want to bring forward the winter break.

While all other clubs in the division bar Ross County added their names to the list to put a temporary halt to the SPFL, Gers decided to stick out like a sore thumb.

McCarthy believes they’re acting in self-interest, but thinks that the other clubs are also doing the same.

He wrote, “Rangers’ stance on SPFL winter break switch is pure self-interest but so is everyone else’s. Celtic want 60,000 fans for the derby and their title rivals want their best players available.

“Let’s go back to April 2020 for a reminder.

“The vote to call the 2019/20 season early as Covid grabbed the world by the throat. The day that sporting integrity in Scottish football was screwed up into a ball tossed in the bin.”

Facts

The reason clubs have a vote and say in these matters is so they can do what works best for them.

In this case, Rangers think continuing with the league, even with limited attendances works well.

They do well playing the title-winning season behind closed doors and would not mind playing the next few games with 500 people in the stands.

Celtic currently have a number of injury worries, so it is convenient for them to postpone the Old Firm until their players are back to full fintess.

Rangers are in a good run of form and would want the league to continue so that they can make the most of this.

While it’s true that they’re acting selfish, they’ve got every right to do so, just like all the other clubs.
