BBC man slams Rangers defender James Tavernier v Dundee United

Clive Lindsay has slammed James Tavernier for not doing enough to win the ball back from Adrain Sporle during Rangers v Dundee United on Saturday.

The Gers captain started the game out of position at centre-back, but after nervy moments, like the one Lindsay discussed, he moved back to his customary right-back role.

This saw Nathan Patterson move to left-back and Calvin Bassey back to centre-back.

On his BBC match feed, Lindsay wrote, “First real sight of goal comes for the depleted visitors.

“James Tavernier is beat too easy by Adrian Sporle before the ball breaks to former Rangers forward Nicky Clark on the edge of the box.

“The United striker has a pop, but goalkeeper Allan McGregor is down to his right to gather.”

Bad experiment

Starting Tavernier at centre-back seemed to be the wrong decision from the outset and proved to be exactly that.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst surely would have worked on this system in training, but was quick to realise it wasn’t working.

He winged in the changes on the go and got Tavernier back to his preferred position.

The Gers captain is not known to be that good a defender so it was questionable to think he would do well there.

His main strengths are going forward and wreaking havoc in the final third, not staying 70 yards away from goal in his own half.

GvB may be wanting someone who’s a good ball player to be deployed there, but Tavernier is not the right man for him.
