Sky Sports: Rangers tell van Bronckhorst he does not have to sell players in January despite major losses

Rangers have told Giovanni van Bronkhorst that he’s under no obligation to sell players in the January transfer window, according to Sky Sports.

The broadcaster reports that despite the Gers suffering a £23.5million loss last season, players like Ryan Kent, Joe Aribo and Ianis Hagi won’t have to be sold to balance the books next month.

When the Gers’ accounts were published last month, they initially said they needed to raise £7.5million before the end of the season.

However, managing director Stewart Robertson confirmed at the AGM on 30 November that this figure has already been met thanks to investors.

Brilliant news

Van Bronckhorst has done a wonderful job so far at Ibrox but there’s no doubt that the Dutchman will want to put his own stamp on the squad.

He’ll also want to sort out several flaws that are still visible within the team, especially in the heart of the defence.

Connor Goldson’s contract expires at the end of the season and his performances this season have been well below what we expect from the ex-Brighton centre-back.

Filip Helander and Leon Balogun have both had injuries while Balogun and Calvin Bassey – as well as Aribo – could be included in Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations squad next month.

It’s great that we won’t have to sell players to bring new ones in but we wouldn’t be opposed to raising funds further by agreeing sales.

However, we’d rather that happened in the summer instead of midway through the season when maybe one or two top-class signings will do.
