Gordon Smith baffled by Euan Anderson decision in first half of Rangers v St Johnstone

Gordon Smith was baffled by one of Euan Anderson’s decisions in the first half of Rangers’ clash with St Johnstone on Wednesday night.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side were on top for most of the game at Ibrox but a decision to award a foul in favour of the visitors left Smith scratching his head.

Scott Arfield slid into a challenge on Shaun Rooney and seemingly won the ball before bringing the Saints player down.

Smith disagreed with the decision.

“I don’t really know why, I don’t see why that’s a foul,” said Smith on Rangers TV during the first half.

“He’s gone in to win the ball. I didn’t think that would be a foul but nowadays, the referees are just told if there’s physical contact, they have to give a free-kick.”

Took our time

Alfredo Morelos’ goal was enough to put the Gers ahead at half-time – but they did make us wait.

Van Bronckhorst’s attackers created chance after chance in that first half but Zander Clarke stood his ground well in the away side’s goal as the defence did, ultimately, manage to reduce the overall quality of our opportunities.

However, that corner routine was brilliant with Connor Goldson’s flick-on finding Morelos at the back post to score while unmarked.

Anderson’s dodgy decision for that Arfield wasn’t a massive one but referees shouldn’t be giving away fouls for stuff like that.

It was a good challenge by Arfield, who’s done well in this game.

He’s caused problems for the Saints throughout that first 45 minutes with him, Ryan Kent and Joe Aribo combining very well at times.

We just need a bit more incision through the middle to improve the quality of our goalscorinnng chances.
