BBC Sportscene pundit wowed by ‘phenomenal’ Joe Aribo in Rangers win v St Johnstone

BBC Sportscene pundit Shelley Kerr was blown away by midfielder Joe Aribo as Rangers won 2-0 against St Johnstone at Ibrox on Wednesday.

Aribo, 25, has been in scintillating form for the Gers this season and was at his absolute best again versus the Saints as he pulled the strings in what was a dominant display by the Scottish Premiership leaders.

In the first half, the Nigeria international almost scored when a sumptuous effort from outside of the box struck the post.

Speaking on RangersTV at half-time, ex-Scotland Women player and manager Kerr said: “It’s a great bit of play from [Ianis] Hagi but this is what Joe Aribo does.

“I mean, the strike is phenomenal.

“I actually thought it hit the back stanchion but it doesn’t, it hits the post.

“Good bit of play from Hagi, coming inside and he’s hit that with a bit of venom and Zander Clark’s not getting that.

“An inch the other side [of the post] and that’s a wonderful goal if it goes in.”

Tremendous Aribo

The best piece of business Rangers can do in January is to get Aribo tied down to a new contract.

As it stands, the Nigerian will enter the final year of his deal at Ibrox when this season ends – and that’s dangerous territory.

Unless a new agreement is reached, it means it’s very likely that Aribo will have to be sold next summer and it also means that the Gers might not be able to sell him for his actual value.

Aribo’s the best player in Scotland right now and there’s absolutely no way you can disagree with that.

While the Daily Record are ranking Callum McGregor as the number one player in Scotland in 2021, we all know that it’s Aribo.

He’s bound to be linked with a move to the Premier League in January and next summer but the important thing is definitely getting him a new deal.

We could be playing in the Champions League group stages next season if we win the Premiership title and we don’t see how Aribo would turn his nose up at that to move to teams like Aston Villa.

In other Rangers news, Sky Sports have shared an update on whether the Gers’ clash with Dundee United will go ahead.
