French football expert blasts ’embarrassing’ Rangers v Lyon update as statement made

French football reporter Jonathan Johnson has blasted Lyon after they messed Rangers fans around ahead of their Europa League showdown on Thursday.

Gers fans were initially told they would not be able to attend the match at the Groupama Stadium but Lyon have since done a U-turn, despite supporters losing money by cancelling flights and hotels.

Rangers shared their frustration in a club statement on Tuesday and CBS Sports journalist Johnson vented his anger about the state of French football right now.

“French football a laughing stock once more for being unable to get the basics right for a simple away day,” said Johnson via his personal Twitter account in response to the Gers’ statement on Tuesday.

“Embarrassing when regular domestic issues are rightly exposed on the continental stage.”

Disgusting

Lyon should be made to reimburse Rangers fans any money they have lost out on because they’ve had to cancel travel and accommodation in France this week.

It’s baffling that the French club opted to make such a turnaround without realising the gravity of their actions.

There are bound to be plenty of empty seats in the away end at Lyon’s stadium on Thursday night and that’s a crying shame as we have one of the best sets of travelling fans in the world.

We’ve seen our away support act as a 12th man on so many occasions and although it’s essentially a dead-rubber tie between Rangers and Lyon on Thursday, there’s no doubt our chances of springing a surprise would be boosted by having fans in the ground.

We’re not quite sure just how bad things are in French football at the minute – that’s Johnson’s area of expertise. But it sounds as though this farce isn’t a surprise to the French football journalist.
