Steven Gerrard reveals why he left Rangers for Aston Villa

Steven Gerrard believes that for the first time in his life, he decided to put himself and his family first, and that was why he left Rangers.

As quoted by the Daily Record about his Ibrox departure, the 41-year-old discussed the Gers fans and also the timing of his departure.

However, he believed that the Villa job wasn’t likely to come up again, and that was one of the reasons he moved to the Premier League.

He said: “I think the frustration always comes from the timing. I certainly respect and understand people if they’ve got a gripe about that.

“When you’re in my position, you always wonder ‘, will the opportunity come again?’

“So when you get the chance to come to Villa, back in the Premier League, the size of the club and the ambition, for me the timing was something I couldn’t think about – it was more about grasping the opportunity.

“I leave with a heavy heart but also with my head held high.

“For once in my life, I thought about me and what’s best for my family. That’s why I made the decision.”

Reasonable and honest from Gerrard.

In his time with the Bears, Gerrard did a superb job, and he has laid the foundations perfectly for Giovanni van Bronckhorst to come in and take the club to the next level.

We were all gutted to see Gerrard leave Ibrox, but his answer here is honest and genuine, and it was clearly something he didn’t just rush into.

He has also had a great start, winning three of his first four games as manager, while GvB has won every game since he replaced Gerrard.

So, though it was sad to see him leave, it is nice to see that so far, the move has worked out well for the club and for the former Liverpool man.

Gerrard will always be remembered for what he did at Ibrox, and rightly so. However, now it is time to move on and let him carry on his career while the Bears look ahead to a bright future under van Bronckhorst.

In other Rangers news, one Gers man is set to reject a move away from Ibrox in January.
