Rangers may cash in on some players to become self-sustaining
We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers...
Graeme Murty’s exit could lead to Rangers cashing in on some of their key players in the coming transfer windows.
That’s according to Dr Dan Plumley, who claims that the former Head of Elite Academy Development’s departure after Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s arrival may change the club’s philosophy.
Talent production is essential for balancing the profits and losses for clubs like Rangers.

However, the transition to this sort of system could lead to some of the players leaving the club in the shorter term.
Speaking about what the post-Murty future holds for Rangers, Dr Dan, the Sheffield Hallam University expert, told Ibrox News, “Graeme Murty certainly played a big role in developing players.
“Regarding the sale of players, it all depends on where they see the business model and see if they can cash in on their main players in the future. But that is a possibility.
“There is also a model that can involve developing talent and raising funds. It keeps costs low.

“It might take a little more time to generate success. You can use it as a model to sell talent in the future.
“All of that coincides with the objectives and what they want to do as a club.”
Murty’s departure was made official in November 2021, ending his five-year roller coaster journey at the Ibrox.
He also stepped in to take over the first team on two separate occasions in the past.
