Jim White leaps to Rangers defence as Simon Jordan makes Ibrox manager suggestion

Jim White is adamant that Rangers is not a stepping stone for managers to further their careers.

Speaking via talkSPORT on Friday morning (3 December), ex-Arsenal defender Martin Keown discussed ex-Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard’s future.

“If Gerrard progresses as he is and starts well, he could take that job at Liverpool,” he said.

White hit back: “Having said that, Rangers would argue they’re no building block for anyone. Rangers is not a passing-through place for anybody.”

Keown: “No, but I’m afraid they are Jim, I think they are.”

Ex-Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan cut in, saying: “It clearly is, unfortunately, tragically.”

White: “Down here you lot think that.”

Reality?

Let’s not get things twisted here – Rangers are a huge club, with a storied history.

Gerrard’s work has set the building blocks in place for Giovanni van Bronckhorst to take it on and further improve the side.

That means leading the club to consecutive titles and building a dynasty at Ibrox.

That means winning some domestic cups and trying to progress past the last 16 of the Europa League.

That means qualifying for the Champions League group stage and getting into the knock-out stages of the competition.

But is there a limit to what can be achieved at Ibrox? Champions League glory is the top prize for most managers in the industry, and Rangers just do not possess the finances to make themselves contenders.

That’s not their fault, as the money just does not flow to Scotland in the same way it does to England.

It would take a change of leagues for things to change or something monumental across Scotland.

Those both present their own issues and look like being a mile away at this moment in time.
