Andy Walker slams Steven Davis on two occasions in first half of Rangers clash v Hibernian

Andy Walker slammed Steven Davis on two occasions in the first half of Rangers’ clash against Hibernian at Easter Road on Wednesday night.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst made one change to his starting line-up from the win over Livingston and that was to replace Scott Arfield with 36-year-old Davis.

However, the veteran Northern Irishman really failed to impress Walker in the first half by failing to make the best of an opportunity in front of goal when he fired a tame shot at Hibs goalkeeper Matt Macey.

“It’s not like Davis to not come up with a better end product,” said Walker in the first half on Sky Sports Football.

“Look out here, he’s in his own half but as soon as it makes his way to [Ianis] Hagi, he’s determined to get to it but he just normally has a better end product than that.”

Minutes later, after a great bit of play by Alfredo Morelos when he came deep, the ball made it’s way to Davis in the middle of the park.

He ran forward with the ball but was easily dispossessed, leading to Walker saying: “Excellent from Morelos – not so by Davis.”

Not so excellent, indeed

Davis wasn’t great in the first half, let’s face it.

While many Rangers fans will just point to the fact that it’s Walker who’s saying this about Davis – you simply cannot disagree with him on this occasion.

Davis has been poor this season and if anything, we’d rather see Arfield in the midfield than the former Aston Villa and Southampton player.

His contract expires at the end of the season and based on what we’ve seen so far this term, we’d say that he’s replacable.

While he’s very experienced and there’s no doubt that helps out a lot on the training ground at Auchenhowie, we do have a lot of ageing players in this squad and in the summer, a refresh would not go amiss.

Davis has been an outstanding servant for Rangers but it seems to us as though time may be getting the best of him because he’s nowhere near the level he was at last term.

What will happen next season if he gets another contract?

In other Rangers news, Steven Gerrard wants to sign this Gers ace for just £200,000 despite van Bronckhorst throwing him back into the squad.
