Adrian Mutu: Ianis Hagi should stay at Rangers

Rangers winger Ianis Hagi has been urged to stay at the club by Romanian compatriot Adrian Mutu.

Turkish news outlet Sabah have reported that Galatasaray want to sign the 23-year-old in the January transfer window.

Hagi, who has scored 14 goals in 77 appearances for Rangers, has a contract at Ibrox that runs until the summer of 2024.

Speaking to ProSport, ex-Chelsea and Juventus striker Mutu said: “I do not understand why Ianis has to leave. Rangers is a great team and I think Ianis needs to strengthen its position and become a scorer.

“He needs a goal, he also needs a goal for the national team. People are waiting for the goal. The moment the goal comes, then you will leave with a different status.

“You go differently as number one to the Rangers. I think he has very good performances at Rangers and it’s not an easy championship, he plays with axes on the table.”

Tempting move

Giovanni van Bronckhorst clearly views Hagi as an important part of his team, as he has started the winger in his first two games in the Bears dugout.

As the club look to secure a second successive Scottish Premiership title, they will not want to let any key players go in the January transfer window.

Hagi has not scored a league goal since the opening weekend of the season but if he does start finding the net again as Mutu wishes, then there will only be more clubs who will be interested in signing him.

The 23-year-old has previously stated his desire to play for Galatasaray one day, while a move to the Premier League could also be tempting, particularly if Steven Gerrard and Aston Villa come calling.

But as interest grows, so will Hagi’s price tag, meaning Rangers would be in a strong position to negotiate a good fee for one of their most valuable assets.

In other Rangers news, Brian Laudrup has told Rangers the one player they must not sell in January.
