Brian Laudrup: Rangers should not sell Connor Goldson despite recent controversy

Rangers should not sell centre-back Connor Goldson in the January transfer window, according to club legend Brian Laudrup.

The Englishman’s contract at Ibrox expires at the end of the season, leaving his future up in the air amid transfer speculation.

Goldson caused controversy last week by saying Rangers “lacked hunger” after their League Cup semi-final defeat to Hibernian, adding more uncertainty to the situation.

Writing in his latest column for the Scottish Daily Mail, Laudrup discussed the possibility of the Bears making changes in defence in the transfer window.

“I don’t think there is any doubt centre-back would be a priority area if van Bronckhorst has scope to make additions in January,” he wrote.

“He’s tight for options there through injuries in any case, but the whole scenario surrounding Goldson adds another complication to the picture.

“We’re only a matter of weeks away from the former Brighton defender being able to speak to other clubs. His form has not been great. There is noise around everything he does.

“Whatever the 28-year-old’s current issues, Rangers simply cannot do without him unless they are able to make a top-quality defensive signing in January.

“Even if the right man could be found, would it then be worth selling Goldson for the relatively small fee he would bring in during January? I’m not sure.”

Mind elsewhere?

The drop off in Goldson’s form between last season and this season is a big worry for Rangers.

The 28-year-old played a pivotal role at the heart of defence as the club won their first league title in a decade, going unbeaten in the process.

However, he has looked a shadow of that player so far in the 2021-22 campaign and put in another shaky performance against Livingston on Sunday.

Goldson was caught out for Livi’s goal in Rangers’ 3-1 win, failing to deal with a long ball over the top which was then capitalised on.

His comments after the League Cup semi-final only fuelled the suggestion that he sees his future away from Glasgow and perhaps his mind is already elsewhere.

If that is the case, Rangers are surely best to sell him in January, no matter how good a defender everyone knows he can be.
