BT Sport hold firm stance after recent Rangers-Sutton row
BT Sport’s Darrell Currie read out a prepared statement on air for Rangers, warning them that they cannot pick and choose which pundits should be allowed inside Ibrox.
This development comes after Chris Sutton was denied entry into the home of the defending Scottish champions once again.
As part of the Europa League coverage, he was supposed to be inside Ibrox, but had to cover it from an empty Celtic Park.
Currie read out the statement, via the Daily Record, which said, “Let’s discuss Chris Sutton, the elephant in the room.
“We have a presentation team who reflect all angles and experiences in Scottish football but who were not all provided with the necessary accreditation at Ibrox today.
“We will not be forced to split a team behind and in front of screen. The only way to provide viewers with the continuity of coverage across tonight’s two matches – featuring Celtic and Rangers – was to set up a studio elsewhere.”
“We decided with Celtic playing first that we would come to Celtic Park and joining us for this one is Chris Sutton and Stilian Petrov.”
Getting sick of it
There’s always an issue whenever the Europa League broadcasting comes up as few names aren’t let in through the gates at Ibrox.
Sutton is one of those who’s not let into the stadium and we’re getting sick of it becoming big news every time.
Either Rangers or BT Sport should just drop their firm stance and move on with it.
This show of one-upmanship is only affecting the broadcasting and the experience that fans at home are getting.
For Scottish football to thrive, the best games must be given the best coverage along with pundits who know what they’re talking about.
While we don’t agree with most of what Sutton says, he certainly gets everyone talking whenever he says something that deters from the mainstream and that is what makes good TV viewing.
The biggest losers here at BT Sport and their choice to move it to Parkhead will also not be the best for business.
