Connor Goldson leaves door open for Rangers exit amid Aston Villa links
Rangers defender Connor Goldson has refused to commit his future to the defending champions amid links with Premier League side Aston Villa.
The 28-year-old has been linked with a move south of the border in the past, but Steven Gerrard’s arrival at Villa Park has seen the speculation mount for the Englishman.
According to the Daily Record, he was linked with an exit the moment Gerrard join Villa, a super-wealthy club, and his comments on his future have done little to allay any fears among the Ibrox faithful.
He said, via Birmingham Live, “I haven’t really spoken to my agent or the club recently so I couldn’t tell you where it’s at.
“I’m just focused on the club, playing football and making sure this football club wins.”
Good chance he leaves
If Goldson is to make an England bow before he retires then he’s possibly going to have a better chance of doing that in Spain.
We’ve not seen Gareth Southgate at Scottish games or even discuss the SPL as his net seems to be cast solely on the first two divisions in England with a few big names from Germany.
Villa are thought to be keen on signing a defender in January and we won’t be surprised if they make a move for Goldson.
He’ll have six months left on his deal then and while he could agree a pre-contract deal and join for free in the summer, they’re in a bit of relegation fight and need reinforcements quickly.
It would be harsh for Rangers to lose out on Goldson, but if the player isn’t happy in Scotland then it makes very little sense to keep him.
Once labelled “fantastic” by Gerrard, the Englishman could be set for a reunion with him in his home country.
